Adele Ahlberg Calhoun and her husband Doug have served on the pastoral staff of four churches and are currently copastors of spiritual formation at Highrock Covenant Church in Arlington, Massachusetts. As certified Enneagram instructors, they enjoy resourcing spiritual leaders and pastors through spiritual direction and teaching the Enneagram. Adele is the author of Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, Invitations from God, and coauthor of True You. This is a resource to be used for doing serious work in character transformation.There are plenty of books out there that give you the introductory understanding of the Enneagram that we all need, this one goes far beyond that. You can take the time to look through it at a leisurely pace, but there's a lot of depth here to explore slowly. Each chapter is filled with excellent application questions and spiritual practices to engage in with God.Beyond just the chapters on each Enneagram number, there are 12 additional resources that the authors have developed in the appendix of this book that can help you engage with God in a very powerful way if you’re willing to invest the time to go there.I’ve read quite a few books on the Enneagram over the past ten years, and this one is very unique in the way it’s constructed. Even if you know a lot about the Enneagram itself, you’ve probably never engaged with the tool from the angle that this book was written. You’re getting a huge amount of wisdom packed into one small book!Side Note Worth Mentioning:There is a section near the beginning highlighting the definitions that the authors use throughout the book.These definitions are incredibly clear on what those terms mean, particularly as they relate to the Christian perspective of these definitions.I believe this is going to be extremely helpful for many who have been using these terms without clear mental images of what they are actually trying to say.Ex: What comes to your mind when you think of your true self? What comes to your mind when you think of your false self? These terms get thrown around a lot now in Enneagram resources, but they are so important to be defined well if we’re using them in our journey toward complete Christlikeness.

As a 73 year old, somewhat un-resourced male THREE, I have found this book to be an amazing resource. I have been an Enneagram student for over 15 years and this book has opened my eyes to previously undiscovered issues and challenges as I seek transformation. In this book, I recognized myself so many times and found it to be so helpful to read the authors’ insights.“Not enough” frequently echoes in my mind and this book helps me to see and to discover what to do with these feelings. Being wanted, valued and seen as excellent has been a driving force all my life and feeling insignificant has been intolerable. In this book, I see how I over-identify with my successes and/or failures. This book has helped me to understand the sources of many of these feelings and helped me create strategies to deal with them.I am now ready to retake the Enneagram test and to get a better grade… I found the authors discussion of “harmony triad” to be insightful. The book has helped me to notice how I respond when I am healthy and how I can find peace and harmony “in a way that isn’t just winning”.In conclusion, I found all of the Spiritual Rhythms for Threes to be particularly helpful. I loved the notion that “transformation happens when we intentionally put on the true, truthful self”. I found the practice of “Heart Presence with God” to be particularly soothing and peaceful. As I engaged with the recommended exercises, I felt a wonderful and peaceful Godly presence.In this book, I have discovered new insights about the THREE triad and I found the whole book to be extremely well written and a valuable and compelling read.

I was given the privilege of reading this book before it went public and I can say with confidence that the Calhoun's and Loughrige's have given us a feast for the soul. If you are an enneagram practitioner, this book will continue to deepen your understanding, application, and transformation. This is not for beginners but for those who have some immersion in the enneagram. With skillful word pictures, and personal examples, the authors take us on a journey of connecting the dots not only in our own type but more importantly connecting the way we have been created, (head, heart, gut). Being present to the presence in the present moment of our life is hard work but this book helps us do just that. The resources in the appendix are an added dessert to an already five star 9 course meal which you will find fully satisfying. This is a must have book in your hands if you are interested in being formed deeper in your walk with Christ or helping others in their journey.

I read this book after seeing Laura Carstensen quoted in Time Magazine's excellent multi-faceted March 2, 2015 cover story on aging. Ironically, I was reading this while waiting as my wife was getting cataract and lens replacement surgery that will enable her to see better than she's ever seen in her entire life. Along with about 30 other "old people" who were about to experience the same miracle of modern medical technology on an assembly line to fix their eyes for life in a 10-minute operation.The previous reviews here for "A Long Bright Future"--while mostly 4- and 5-star--seemed somehow less than passionate, as was the audience to whom Carstensen presented in a 2012 TED YouTube video soon after "A Long Bright Future" was published. It's hard to be passionate about something none of us really understands nor appreciates yet ... that we are the first demographic cohort to really experience not just the government's plan for how Social Security, Medicare and 401(k)s will work together to sustain our after-work passage but also to learn how to make the most of additional years of longevity that we are all inheriting.It's kind of a "be careful what you wish for" circumstance we find ourselves in. We are constantly guilted for not saving enough for retirement, but no one ever planned for us to live this long or to have access to medical innovations that are adding quality years if not decades to our lives. As a 65-year old who still enjoys working, I read much of the daily barrage of articles and books about preparing emotionally and financially for retirement and have posted several of my reviews on Amazon for books like "Falling Short" and "Unretirement." "A Long Bright Future" adds a broader perspective to the discussion by reassuring us that we're not stupid for not preparing. We just need to appreciate what's happening in a broader, more opportunistic way.Several of the Amazon reviews here also raise the questions, "who is this book for?" and "who can best benefit from its message?" One reviewer was disappointed that Carstensen didn't describe what the future was actually going to be like. This reminded me of conversations I used to have with a colleague who also enjoyed science fiction movies that portray the future. He observed that most future visions were broken-down architectures from where we live in today, often bleak and dark, but with some cool new technology in the middle of the scenes. Think "Blade Runner." Carstensen points out that it's difficult for each of us to really envision a future that's not deeply impacted by what we know and do today. So, it seems to me that this book will benefit people of all age groups, but probably mostly 40- to 70-somethings will take the time to read it. But in doing so, we can all benefit in realizing that we can be productive and offer value to others for much longer than today's political debates and financial industry alarmists portray.Because as difficult as it is to make good decisions, many of these debates and alarmists are correct that something must be done if we are to live into our 90's and beyond. Laura Carstensen helps to us to think and plan at a deeper level to take better advantage of the extra time we have to gain greater satisfaction in what we can do for others and for ourselves.

This is the first time I have been compelled to submit a review of a book on Amazon. I just finished reading Dr. Carstensen's book and I am so excited to share it with others. Fortunately, I will be able to do so as I will be teaching a class entitled "Growing with Intention: Having the Life you Want after Age 40" through my local college's continuing education program starting in February 2011. Dr. Carstensen's book challenges baby boomers to change the way aging is viewed in our culture. I am so encouraged by her message. And, I am so thankful that I discovered this book just in time to share it with my students!

However, as an aged person myself I found some of the suggestions impractical for those of us who have already reached our"older " years. Not what I was expecting, but very informative and enjoyable read.update in July 2018 - I have often thought about Dr. Carstensen's ideas presented in this book. When it came time for my to do my thesis in my LL.M. program. I turned to some of her ideas to complete it. Dr. Carstensen has many good insights about how we have to look at aging differently and if we are to look at aging differently, perhaps we should approach the earlier life a little differently too. Life might be better and maturity developed more appropriately with an outlook that is less of a mad rush and more intentional and paced.

The underlying message about the aging of our population and some of the consequences was straigtforward (although not necessarily "new news"), but the latter chapters I found somewhat repetitive and disappointing (perhaps I was looking for that "bright" future)

I bought this book as a cultural supplement while I am beginning to learn Chinese. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a quick overview and a conversational introduction from someone who has spent a lot of time in China. As I was reading through this book, I found the brevity with which the content was brought forth easy to consume. I also linked a lot of the tips that were included for those who are going to be interacting with Chinese people, whether in work or in recreation. I thought these tips were anecdotal and at the same time encompassing a wide variety of circumstances. If you are looking for a book with a basic introduction to Chinese culture, this may be the book for you.

I lived in Hong Kong for a year and a half in the 80's, but a lot has changed in China since then. Before a recent trip to China I wanted a quick refresher on Chinese history and the classic Chinese literary works that are reflected in a lot of Chinese media and art. This book provided both as well as a lot of practical information on traveling, eating, and understanding modern Chinese culture. It's written in an easy-to-read style that is informative and not boring.

Being back and forth to China for 10 years, this book is very entertaining.Personally Im a rebel, I dont let cultures dictate me how to run my life, I am the master....I can live with that but this book is good as getting an idea how societies function (usually that is, dont take this as a dogma) its good to help you fit in an understand and also respect other people there.

Bought this after reading "A Geek's Guide to Japan" (which is excellent!). In comparison to the Japan book, this one reads like a dry collection of Wikipedia articles.

Excellent book that provides a solid understanding of the current status of China, with historic narratives, pictures, accounts, etc. that help bring someone traveling to China quickly up to speed across a wide array of topics! Highly recommend.

Written in a format similar to DK travel books or the National Geographic magazine (with a plethora of photos), this is a colorful, informative, and lively introduction to 21st Century China. Matthew Christensen and Michael Paul pack a lot of useful information into an affordable volume that is suitable for (college or high school) students or travelers who are new to things Chinese. Most "introduction to China" books either focus on a particular academic discipline or treat important topics too simplistically. This book finds an agreeable middle ground. History, geography, politics, language, food, society, culture, and travel are all covered in an accessible and accurate way. There is an excellent chapter on "The Face of Urban China," which is the part of China most new visitors have a chance to see. While China is rapidly urbanizing, many Chinese still live in the countryside; it would have been nice to see a little more space dedicated to the lives of China's still-agrarian rural dwellers. That small quibble aside, this is an excellent primer on Greater China. Quite frankly, it made me yearn for some boiled pork dumplings and another trip to the "Middle Kingdom!"

Really disappointed in her depiction of pro-lifers. She made no effort to understand pro-lifers. She made them look like a bunch of ignorant religious fanatics who are more concerned about religion than people. This book was a waste of time. I’ve always enjoyed her books because they make me think about both sides of an issue. This book had an agenda but it fell on deaf ears because she didn’t take time to develop the pro-life characters. She treated the abortion doctor like a saint. It was really slanted.

In A SPARK OF LIGHT, Jodi Picoult attempts to address the hot button divide between pro-choice and pro-life advocates in this country, specifically the Deep South. Given the current political climate in America, this could have been a provocative story in the manner of SMALL GREAT THINGS, her magnum opus on racism. Instead A SPARK OF LIGHT reads like the script of a mediocre Lifetime movie. Never afraid to confront controversy, Jodi Picoult, to my great disappointment, let me down. The Author’s Notes are far more intriguing than her fictional account of The Center, a women’s health facility in Jackson, Mississippi.Using a literary device that sometimes works, she begins with the denouement and works backward to the beginning of a pivotal day in the lives of several women and a doctor who performs abortions. The story begins when a man enters The Center and begins shooting and taking hostages. From there, Picoult goes hour-by-hour back to daybreak, introducing each character. By the time she reaches breakfast, I have repeatedly heard the same stories.George, the shooter, is a pro-life zealot who is avenging his daughter, presumably because she had difficulty during an abortion. Wren, the motherless teenage daughter of a police officer, is seeking birth control. Bex, Wren’s aunt, is her mother figure. Hugh, father of Wren, is the hostage negotiator. Izzy, a nurse, is contemplating an abortion because she, who grew up destitute, does not want to tie down her wealthy boyfriend. Olive, a lesbian neuroscientist, has an unspecified medical issue. Joy, who grew up in foster care, is pregnant as the result of an affair with a married judge. Vonita is the motherly owner of The Center. Louie Ward is the physician. Janine, a pro-life advocate, pretends to be pregnant in an effort to demonstrate that The Center advocates “killing babies”. Beth, a teenager, is lying in a hospital bed, having been charged with murder of her unborn child.Every character is a stereotype; every plot line is cliche. The reverse timeline doesn’t work for me. Over and over, the characters tell the same stories, and I became terminally bored by them, not to mention unsympathetic. Needless to say, I don’t expect resolution of this highly charged and emotional debate in one work of fiction, but I hoped that Jodi Picoult would tell a more interesting story. What a disappointment.

As a long-time fan of Jodi Picoult, I could not be more disappointed in "A Spark of Light." First of all, her choice to write the entire story backwards was a poor one. It's not that I had a hard time following it, but that the plot (what little plot there was) didn't warrant it. The "twists" were cliches at best, and all were apparent to me before 25% of the book had passed. As for the characters - they were afterthoughts, chosen to serve Ms. Picoult's chosen and timely issue. None were followed up on in the Epilogue except the detective and his daughter - and even that was just the immediate aftermath. Every other character was left hanging, except the ones we knew were dead from Chapter 1. While her afterword claims she was open-minded to both sides of the issues, her pro-life characters were all cliched and extremely unlikable. Even the main antagonist, the shooter, wasn't well written. Despite being hit over the head early on with "bad childhood, PTSD," yadda yadda, and even given what was his motivating factor, I couldn't see how quickly he had moved from the life he was living to mass murder. The entire time I was reading, I just felt like there were missing pieces everywhere. I know Ms. Picoult is a much better writer than this, and I'm not sure what happened. Maybe she should go back to writing compelling characters instead of relying on gimmicks and making the hot issue of the day the main character of her story.

I was sadly disappointed with this book, and until now have been an avid fan of Picoult’s books. There was no “spark” between the words and me. Nope, not at all. And then the cutesy artifice of writing the book in reverse. Who wants the denouement in the first chapter. Not I. Save your money. Hope she redeems herself with her next book.

I really like Jodi Piccoult as a writer so I was excited to read her newest book. She faithfully covers topical issues from all points of view and she does that again here with the issue of right to life vs right to chose. Unfortunately, the writing device she used left me baffled for 90% of the book. She starts the story about 3/4 of he way through the day a man enters a women’s clinic, shoots and kills two women, injures others and holds hostages. THe book then backs up hour by hour to fill in main character’s backgrounds. As someone who never reads the ending of a story first, this was very frustrating. In the end, she reveals why she chose to use this device, but I think the story telling could have been more effective telling it in a straight forward manner but still revealing the twist at the end.

"The High Price of Pest Control" is a dark, sinister, funny, and most definitely twisted novella that has ratcheted up the wicked sense of humor so it is off the chart. The main character's live-in lover whose job was taking care of Krill's comforts has left him. The upscale apartment is in disarray and is beginning to show signs of infestation, but he can't get the apartment co-op's help with his pest-control problem. It's a dilemma for sure; but rules or bending them for his own personal gain never seems to be an issue for the protagonist. He finds a solution or is it?I couldn't put my Kindle down once I started the story. There are all sorts of interesting psychological, emotional, and moral themes packed into this satiric novella. Krill is not a likeable person, but in some ways he represents the darker side of our ambitions, greed, narcissism, and self-indulgence when out of control. The story is reminiscent of Poe's "Tell Tale Heart" with a dash of Faust and some Coen brothers thrown in too. An overall strong short story from a clever author.The positives, I liked the pace of the story, it was quick and kept you turning pages. I liked the main character, I liked how he was his own man and didn't have to rationalize his decisions. I liked the Twilight-zone concept, I liked the flirting/sexy talk, I find Sherman's writing overall to be very relateable. I also felt the length of the book was good.The less good, the ending. The character was developing these plans and future uses, then the end. Did he go through with any of those? Were there any lasting ramifications from the events of the story? I didn't understand, it seemed to end instantly. Also there were times I was questioning the believability of the story, perhaps the story didn't suspend my disbelief well enough.Overall though, a cool concept and a fun short story worth reading.

The short story The High Price of Pest Control will hold your attention and keep you reading. You will not want to put your Kindle down until you finish this exciting short mystery. I can assure you it is the best pest control ever.

I liked how the story started off. Good development for the short amount of time to get you interested in the character. The ending to me was confusing, period. If anyone understands it, please enlighten me.

I read this book because I love other books by this author. This one didn't sync with his other books and wasn't really for me.

While it has become a commonplace to celebrate the virtues of small business, these paeans neglect the fact that successful business enterprises that achieve meaningful scale have long been the chief driver of productivity gains, not mom and pops. Corporate giants develop innovative business models, create entirely new product categories, and raise labor standards in entire sectors. Atkinson and Lind aren't cheerleaders: they acknowledge that rent-seeking businesses come in all sizes, and that there are pathologies of bigness. Yet they do an excellent job of distilling how modern market economies achieve durable productivity growth, and it's not by stunting the growth of new firms. I particularly enjoyed the concluding section, which offers a brilliant typology for understanding contemporary political economy debates: beyond left and right, these debates involve global libertarians, global neoliberals, progressive localists, national protectionists, and national developmentalists. This part of the book is worth the price of admission.

A very important book, because politicians on both sides pander to the popular notion that small business is inherently wonderful while big business is evil. They say things like "small businesses accounts for X% of all new jobs," but don't tell you they also account for most jobs lost. And new jobs pay less than old jobs - which most of us have with BIG companies An eye-opening exercise is debunking that is long overdue.

An incredibly important and broad treatise exploding several myths and current wisdom on the societal and economic value of our largest companies. This well researched book covers almost every angle and should shakeup the view that big is evil and small is wonderful. As the authors repeatedly prove, small is sometimes wonderful (by contributing valuable innovation, although not necessarily jobs). But big, across countries, is better at almost every measure of job creation, salaries, benefits and economic contributions. A must read on dispelling a myth that too many people simply assume is accurate.

Highly reccomend this book after reading land of promise by michael lind. Its solid, nonpartisan, historical, and above all hopeful in this dark nd uninformed age.

I like that this was a easy to understand book about policies and their historical and current effect on big and small businesses alike. I wish I had of read this before taking macro or micro econ.

I highly recommend "Big is Beautiful" by Robert Atkinson and Michael Lind. This is a book that goes against the grain and that's the reason the authors should be commended. Politics is full with hatred of the big - big government, big business, big green, big labor and big technology. I guess many won't like the book because it's contrary to what they hear all of the time. The authors tell us why we should value the big in terms of high wages, the environment, worker safety and other points. The book features cold and hard facts and that's what I like so much about it. It also takes on the arguments often spouted by advocates of small business romanticism.Will this book help us snap out of the small is beautiful, Jeffersonian ideas that have influenced our political system since the 1970's? I hope that it does. However, we'll have to wait and see.

One of the reviews here noted that the book has numerous typos. No surprise. The book's shallow approach to editing reflects its similarly shallow approach to facts and analysis. Throughout, the authors present straw man arguments against which to rail, such as that critics of monopoly would have us all return to being farmers. In fact, critics of bigness have a much more nuanced and thorough methodology. Atkinson and Lind, though, rely on enticing little cherries they have picked--cherries that sound convincing if you're not willing to really examine data.Just one example: They present statistics on wages purportedly showing that large companies pay more. But for this they use data on "establishments", rather than firms. The category of establishments include all the chain outlets of the largest companies. And, yeah, those chains pay their workers a pittance, so if you include them as small businesses, then you're going to get numbers that make it look like "large" companies pay more. In fact, using data that accurately separates businesses according to size, there is a much smaller gap. And that gap then pretty much disappears when you include the key fact that executive salaries skew the data towards higher salaries from big companies. (In the lower half of the bracket? You'll do better at a small company.)Other fact-challenged argumentation in the book includes their claim that the insane broadband fees you pay are actually reasonable, because, um, the US is the "second-least densely populated" nation, and we need to create, like, really wide networks. First, we are not even close to being in the top ten least densely populated. And it's actually in rural areas of the US where you get lower broadband rates, mostly because of *small* locally or regionally-owned community broadband.The authors also like to whine about the existence of some regulatory help and loan programs for small businesses, while ignoring the overwhelming trend of business (de)regulation since the 1990s, which has continually favored large corporations and monopoly power. No doubt this book will get plenty of play here, but readers would be well advised to go and research the reality of monopoly power and how it negatively impacts wages, jobs, and quality of life. The authors probably hope you won't do that.
