Byron Barton's line drawings illustrate Seymour Simon's lucid explanation of basic aerodynamics. This is not a book of step-by-step directions for making many types of airplanes, but rather a series of experiments to help the reader understand why the planes fly the way they do. This creates the opportunity to adapt a few basic basic airplane styles with the knowledge of why their changes in shape, weight, and stabilization affect the flight of the craft. In the process the reader will also learn a little about how real airplanes are designed.This is an outstanding book for budding scientists and engineers to read alone, and it also makes an engaging adult-child activity. It's best suited for elementary ages, although a middle school audience would probably enjoy it too.

my dear old granddad (god rest his soul) did not spend a lot of time with my family, and his gifts were sometimes a bit off-target, as a result.THIS GIFT WILL STAY ON-TARGETI was just a lil' munchkin, or as a certain childhood favorite of fiction used to say, I was "the littlest end of nothin' sharpened!"Granddad was a physics professor during a time, and in a way, quite brilliant. He somehow ended up with the misfortune of being a teacher (He taught many subjects over the years, and I think that this one was math) of not only instructing a young man known as Theodore Kaczynski (I apologize for what must be atrocious spelling, but it's been a while...) but finding that the boy was, at that point in time, more than lucid enough to instruct the class in his absence should an emergency arise(these changes such as Ted had undergone usually manifest only in late teenage/early adult years with a COMPLETE psychological metamorphosis that seems, to all involved, no where close to being a "180"). We knew (or wondered) of him as "Unabomber". Coincidences aside, Granddad had a remarkable ability to teach kids in a way that did not bother them in the least. When reading books such as this one, a child can learn the properties of quantum/gravimetric physics so comfortably that all they realize is that they are learning how to create, design, and customize paper airplanes for optimal performance according to their own personal tastes and preferences, customizing potential trajectory, distance, air speed velocity, and they even learn a bit of history as well. If I am not mistaken, one of my favorite planes from this book is based on an actual aerial transport of roughly similar proportions! I don't think that I will ever have the privilege of seeing that progenitor of the paper model in question close up and in person, but then, we all have to set certain dreams aside to make room for others at one time or another. By the way, much of the terminology that I've used in this review is far more complicated as a description than that which lies within this book's pages. I could never possibly do it justice, save to say that the best way for a kid to learn is to do so without realizing it. if this can be achieved, then school, homework, science fair projects are...well... a breeze.

I'd hoped for diagrams for a variety of paper airplanes, but that's not what the book's about.Instead, it deals mostly with the physics of flight. It does suggest useful, inexpensive experiments for those with a scientific bent.

Very interesting information (forbidden knowledge). Martin Luther was a smart man and Christian thinker. He stood up not only to the Catholic Church hierarchy but to Jews as well. God bless him.

We use this book with Classical Conversations and I absolutely love it. The Experiments are easy to understand and uses materials that are around the house are at least easy to find. It follows the scientific method, What is the purpose, what are your materials, work the procedure, show the results, it even explains why the experiment works instead of leaving you hanging on doing something from a Pinterest fail. I highly recommend any of Janice VanCleave's Science books and experiments.

Cool simple experiments with easy to follow instructions and few materials needed. I use to tutor a homeschool group and always research some additional information to go along with the lesson and experiment.

We use this book for classical conversations. I’m so happy I looked on amazon first 😊. The science experiments are simple and require little materials which is good for little ones.

Great book with lots of quality experiments that are easy to do at home. We are thoroughly enjoying the experiments. My only criticism is that the relationship to the scientific method and scientific principles are somewhat difficult to discern for those without a strong science background.

Simple, basic experiments that help me and my children start discussing more complex scientific concepts. I love that most of the experiments use common things I can find around my house and don't take a lot of time to perform, but still leave an impression and help our scientific discussions.

We love this book. My kids love to do experiments. This book offers lots of quick and easy experiments with minimal supplies and set up time. I’d recommend it.

Early on, he found a benefactor--and in this manner became a modest player in the great Supreme Court decision--Gibbons v. Ogden which struck down monopoly contracts between states and the shipping/passenger water industry. He began to develop a greater presence in steamboats and shipping. This eventually led him to operate transatlantic ships and transportation from the east coast to California--with an overland link through Nicaragua.Even as he was at his peak in the steamboat business, he turned his interest to railroads, which had become a major sector in the United States business galaxy. By his death, he had accumulated massive wealth. The book does an excellent job in providing details of the evolution of his business career--as well as his private life.Among issues discussed that are worth considering: while he could play hardball in the business world (his Wall Street machinations are well described), he also developed efficiencies in his businesses leading him to be able to deliver good service at a lower cost than his competitors. This allowed Vanderbilt, probably one of the most resourceful and clever capitalist entrepreneurs who has ever lived, the freedom to start with a Staten Island ferry that would eventually lead to one of the most massive accumulations of personal wealth and control of capital enterprises of all time. Ironically, the freedom that the Jeffersonians and Jacksonians wanted led to the massive control of the economy not by the government but by incredibly wealthy individuals and corporations.Stiles’ biography is an enormously detailed book. It becomes increasingly technical in the economic sense as Vanderbilt moves from steamboats (and his fascinating adventures in Nicaragua) to railroads. Stiles should get enormous credit not only for his superb research, much better than earlier biographers of Vanderbilt, but also for his objectivity about the man and his ability to make as clear as possible to the average reader the often complex financial issues of Vanderbilt’s life. It is easy to see why this book won awards. Stiles not only gives us a man’s life (both personal life and business life) but how the American economic system developed in the 19th century.Stiles is also a smooth writer. Chapters are divided into reasonable chunks separated by double spacing and the transitions and paragraph structures throughout the book are fluent and easy to follow. If I have any complaint (and it is a small one), it is that many many times Stiles ends these chapter subdivisions with either a cliffhanger sentence or some other “catch” line for the sake of dramatic continuity. This is unnecessary given the overall power of the book and Vanderbilt’s life. Except for that quibble, the book is a biographical tour de force that showed me not just the life of a brilliant, often cold, but complex man but also how the economic history of America as we know it today originated.

Yes, he was the first tycoon, but what's more important is that this is a story about a man who started with nothing and built his wealth with very hard work. This is the story of early America, which is made up of people from other countries who came to this country to make a life in the new world. Vanderbilt's life started with very little education - he had dropped out of school at an early age. Yet his thinking process throughout his life is equivalent to what we would expect from someone with an MBA. He used common sense and long-term thinking whenever he made decisions. What did it cost him to make his millions? Mostly his family paid for his success. He worked constantly. But he figured out how to come out ahead of his competitors. He even figured out how to get across Central America to reach the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic without going around South America. He realized that this shortcut would allow him to get items to California so much quicker; definitely quicker than going across country, which could also be quite dangerous. This biography does an excellent job of describing how he built his success on boats and ships and finished with railroads. It also does an excellent job of describing how he related to other people, including his family members. He wasn't necessarily well liked, but when you finish reading the book, you have to have some respect for the man and his methods and how he built an empire from absolutely nothing. It's a very long book, but every page had so much to say and well worth all the words used to tell the story. I've always thought of the Vanderbilt's through the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC, and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, but this was only part of the end of his life - there was so much more to the man.
